Q: I am an Australian resident and citizen. From 1995-2000 I lived and worked in the UK, where a portion of my salary was contributed to National Insurance. Is it possible to access those funds, and have them transferred into my Australian Super fund?

A: Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to transfer your UK National Insurance contributions into an Australian super fund.

National Insurance (NI) is not a retirement savings account like superannuation – it’s part of the UK’s social security system, used to fund benefits such as the State Pension, healthcare and other public services. Your NI contributions are used to determine whether you qualify for the UK State Pension when you reach the UK pension age.

Even if you’re now an Australian resident, you may still be eligible for a UK State Pension, depending on how many qualifying years of National Insurance you have. Generally, at least 10 qualifying years are required to receive any UK State Pension, and 35 years for the full amount.

If you didn’t work there long enough to qualify, it may be possible to make voluntary National Insurance contributions to increase your qualifying years and improve your pension entitlement. You can find more information about this on the UK Government website:
