Superannuation considerations for couples: How to get the best outcome for your family

Wednesday 25 February 2026 at 11:00 am AEST

This webinar will highlight some of the simple, yet effective ways that spouses can optimise their combined superannuation balances.

We will show you how you can legally access your combined retirement savings earlier, ways to obtain ongoing tax benefits in your retirement and what you can do to manage upcoming legislative changes to the superannuation rules.

During this 1 hour webinar, the SuperGuide team will not only identify these issues, but we will show you how to implement them effectively.

Q: I am aware that SMSFs are allowed to own certain collectable style assets like artwork and motor vehicles.

We have a valuable piece of artwork that we want to transfer into (sell) our SMSF, that we have only very recently set up.

Our personal Accountant (non-SMSF advisor) said that this is not allowed; that my SMSF is not allowed to buy these types of assets from members.

Can I instead sell the asset to a friend; someone unrelated to my SMSF and then have my SMSF acquire the asset from them?

See Garth’s video answer here.

SMSF annual return (SAR): You need to lodge your SMSF annual return by this date if you self-prepare and lodge your SMSF annual return yourself.

Also, if you are a newly registered SMSF and using a tax agent, you need to lodge by this date, unless you were advised of a 31 October date at registration. This is also the payment due date for these funds.

GST lodgement: If your fund is registered for GST, which is becoming more common but not required for most SMSFs, and your GST turnover is more than $75,000, you will need to lodge your quarterly BAS by this day.

This would be most common for SMSFs that own commercial property and collect rent from that property. Rent received on residential property would not usually be subject to GST.

Read more about the need for SMSFs to register for GST.

Where you employ a tax agent to help with these SMSF lodgements, check with them first, as your SMSF may have adjusted lodgement deadlines.
