Q: Just seeking a bit of assistance, if you can. I am 63, currently in full time employment. In November 2025 I plan to take 12 months long service leave half pay from my employment. At the time I take the leave I will be advising my employer that I intend to retire at the expiration of the 12 months long service leave. My question is…given I have officially given my intention to retire, can I access all my super, or do I have to wait until long service leave is finished?

A: The retirement condition of release to access super is met when you have left a gainful employment arrangement after turning 60 or you have permanently retired from gainful employment and you are 60 or more. Learn more about it here.

While on long service leave you are still gainfully employed, and have not met the condition of release. Your employment will cease when your long service leave ends, and you will then meet the retirement condition of release and will be able to access your super.

Super also becomes fully accessible when you turn 65, regardless of employment status.

Until then, it is possible to start a transition to retirement pension to access up to 10% of your balance per financial year if you wish.

Concerned you’re not on track to save enough for a comfortable retirement? Before you commit to working longer or compromising your lifestyle, check how a lifetime pension could help reach your income goals with less.
