Q. I have approximately $10,000 unused concessional contribution cap from 2019-20 that I want to use up this financial year before the opportunity expires. Can I elect to use this unused space first before taking advantage of this year’s cap?

A. No. To begin using concessional cap space from prior years, you must first exhaust the current year’s cap. In 2024-25, the concessional cap is $30,000. To begin accessing unused space from prior years, you must contribute more than $30,000 in concessional contributions during 2024-25.

For example, if your total concessional contributions are $40,000 for the year, $10,000 of unused space from prior years would be carried forward to absorb the additional contributions above the $30,000 annual cap.
