IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Watch our previous webinar, SuperGuide members Q&A: December 2024.

Q: I’m interested in making a large tax-deductible contribution to take advantage of the carry-forward rules, but my super balance is close to the $500,000 limit. Does my balance need to remain under the cap after all my contributions for this financial year are added?

A: No, your total super balance does not need to remain under the cap after contributions are made. You are eligible to carry forward unused concessional cap space from prior years into the current financial year if your total super balance was below $500,000 on the last 30 June.

For example, if your total super balance on 30 June 2024 was $490,000 and your current balance is $530,000 you are still eligible to use carry forward this financial year. However, if your balance remains above $500,000 on 30 June 2025 then carry forward will not be available to you in 2025-26.

There’s nothing worse than saving hard only to find that your investment is a dud. The best time to check how your super fund’s performance compares is now.
